I liked it. I liked that this whole episode had reasons for me to stay engaged, because the emotional connection for the characters pulled me in emotionally as well.
I like case-related episodes where Brennan and/or someone else on her team is emotionally invested and involved in the case. So to have Brennan on the jury, using her big brain to be logical even though she knew that the guy was guilty (based on her gut, something she's honed over the years because of Booth's influence), I really liked the conflicts that arose because of it. And I understood how Angela felt let down, because she thought for sure the guy was guilty and that Brennan being on the jury would get him convicted, but it's not that simple.
Question: did they not identify the body of the witness soon enough for that evidence to be introduced into the trial? Or does that have to remain separate, regardless of its connection to the first trial? Because I would have thought that a witness whose body turns up dead would mean the initial trial was not over and his death would need to be investigated to make sure it wasn't part of the original case. Could the prosecutor have gotten a continuance of some sort?
I liked that moment when Brennan was on the phone with Booth, and he couldn't talk about his case, and the lightbulb went off over her head at the realization that their cases were related. Really interesting stuff.
I also liked that Angela kept working to try to find the woman who stole Cam's identity. I wonder why her friend did this to her. Interesting set-up for an upcoming episode, perhaps!
Thoughts about the Cam thing: How is that woman continuing to make purchases on cards under Cam's name? Once the card is reported as stolen or part of a fraud, there should be no way the thief can keep using it. There should be red alerts going off anytime it's used.
Unless the police or whoever's investigating it is keeping it "open" in order to catch the person, which seems unlikely because it would mean the person continues to get away with racking up charges. And it seems like Angela's the only one really working hard to find the thief, so I can't imagine they'd allow a card to remain open in order to catch the woman. It's very weird and not really thought-through, it would seem.
Even if the woman took out a bunch of cards in Cam's name before the fraud came to light, to spend as much as she could before getting shut down, surely any new cards in Cam's name would be on record now and the companies involved would have shut the cards down as part of an investigation. She couldn't keep using them if they were under Cam's name. They would have to be under someone else's name.
So, it really is a flawed idea. Almost as bad as Hodgins losing all his money under Pelant's supposed genius plan, which is the height of ridiculousness.
Final note: not nearly enough Hodgins. Always want more Hodgins.
